A Mesh of Cultures at an International Fiesta

A lively night of music, dancing and more at the Centreville United Methodist Church on Saturday night.

The Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF) hosted an international fiesta at the Centreville United Methodist Church on Saturday night, as local residents performed songs and dances that celebrated their Korean, Mexican, Guatamalan and Indian heritages.  Donations from the event helped fund the Centreville Labor Resource Center, which opened in 2011 to help day laborers in Centreville find work. Day Laborers Center Celebrates First Anniversary

Community support has been critical.

Organizers celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Centreville Labor Resource Center, a benchmark they said would have been impossible to meet without the broad community support and a small army of volunteers that helped make things happen. The center, a longtime effort of the Centreville Immigration Forum, provides day laborers with a safe place to wait for jobs other than out-of-doors near the Centreville Regional Library. Located in the Centreville Square Shopping Center, the center occupies a space donated by plaza owner and developer Albert J. Dwoskin, a longtime supporter. About 50 supporters attended the anniversary party on Saturday. “We are very happy about what we are able to do,” said Alice Foltz, Centreville Immigration …

Centreville resident Alice Foltz won the Sully District "Community Champion" award from Volunteer Fairfax on Friday. Sully District Supervisor Michael Frey nominated Foltz for the award for her work on immigration and labor issues. Foltz worked through her church, the Wellspring United Church of Christ, to establish an outreach committee to reduce community tensions around the issue. Alice Foltz is a hard working humanitarian whom I admire so much. I watched her bravely and intelligently inform an audience filled with mostly supporters and a few loud and angry hecklers. Alice is full of grace and is an inspiration to all of us! Thanks for your tireless efforts to make Centreville a better place to raise our kids!   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Business owners should consider hiring a day laborer this spring, Centreville resident writes.

In the Grand Mart shopping center there is a groundbreaking type of center. It’s the Centreville Labor Resource Center. The center provides a safe environment for home and business owners to employ day laborers. Volunteers on site can assist in communicating with Spanish-speaking immigrants to negotiate pay, hours to work and transportation.  The center is a resource for homeowners looking to employ skilled painters, gardeners, construction workers, or handymen. The center opened on December 5, 2011, and now has over 40 volunteers and 100 donors.  With spring right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about beautiful landscape or indoor projects. Center laborers provide an excellent value and are in need of employment.  To …

2011: What Opened, What Closed

Centreville welcomes parade of new businesses, and says goodbye to longtime outlets

Centreville residents saw a parade of new businesses open in the community this past year, although they also said goodbye in 2011 to a handful of old standby outlets that shuttered their doors for good.  One of the notable new businesses is the Clifton Saddlery, which gave up the tony community in November and moved to Centreville into an old Hollywood Video store on Multiplex Drive. It was tough moving from Clifton after 24 years, but owner Liz Nuti said they have been amazed at the community response. Although the horses may not be stabled in Centreville, many riders live in the community.  “We have exceeded our expectations so far,” Nuti said. “We are trying to provide them with a one-stop shop.”  Other notable openings: Organizers on …
