Sen. Chap Petersen introduced the bill, which will make it easier for local officials to enforce a growing number of zoning violations across Fairfax County.
A new Virginia law will make it easier for localities to prosecute the renters behind illegal boarding houses. Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the bill, SB 894, into law in March, giving local officials the power to issue summons and fines directly to renters, leasers or subleasers for zoning violations. Sen. Chap Petersen, who represents part of Centreville, introduced the bill. "Unfortunately illegal boarding houses have become a problem in Virginia,” Petersen said in a statement. “What this law means is that if you have an illegal boarding house in your community, law enforcement can go directly to the person living in that home and breaking the law." In Virginia, no more than four unrelated people are legally allowed to live in a single-…

Petersen announced on his blog Thursday that he would not run in 2013.
State Sen. Chap Petersen has announced that he is not running for governor in 2013, as many have speculated in recent months. "I did not deny the inquiries, because I was seriously considering it," Petersen wrote on his blog, OxRoadSouth, on Thursday. Petersen cited obligations to his family, his law practice and constituents in the newly designed 34th district as the reason he decided not to run. The 34th District consists of portions of Centreville, Vienna, Oakton, Annandale, Burke, Fairfax Station and Fairfax City. "To run for public office, a lot of pieces must be in place: family, financial, professional and spiritual. A candidate must also have a vision which is congruent with the moment. Timing is everything," Petersen wrote. "…

Poll: Would you vote for Chap Petersen?
State Senator Chap Petersen, who represents the 34th district, will likely run for governor in 2013, the Washington Post reported Friday. Ben Tribbett, who writes the Not Larry Sabato blog and has been connected to Petersen's campaign for over a decade, told the Post that the only reason Petersen would not run is if Senator Mark Warner decided to campaign for the seat. If Petersen decided to run, his Republican opponent in the general election would be attorney general Ken Cuccinelli, or Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling. The 34th district consists of parts of Centreville, Vienna, Oakton, Annandale, Burke, Fairfax Station and Fairfax City. Petersen won a landslide victory over his opponent, Gerarda Culipher, in the newly-configured district last …

By Brad Fulton Capital News Service RICHMOND – A Senate committee has approved compromise legislation to allow Virginians to hunt on Sundays. The Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee voted 11-4 to lift the state’s ban on Sunday hunting. The bill recommended by the panel would permit hunting on Sundays only on private land in Virginia. The measure now goes to the full Senate for consideration. “We’ve designated hunting and fishing as a constitutional freedom in Virginia,” said Sen. Chap Petersen, a Democrat who represents part of Centreville, who wrote the “private lands” provision. “How you can restrict hunting one day of the week?” The committee Thursday considered four Senate bills regarding Sunday hunting. …

Sixteen candidates for state Senate, House attend.
Finding ways to fix the troubled Northern Virginia traffic commute, help fund K-12 classrooms and funnel more good paying jobs into the area dominated a candidate’s forum in Chantilly Thursday night. The Sully District Council of Citizens Associations hosted the forum at the Sully District Government Center for candidates in House of Delegates and Senate districts which include Sully. All candidates at the forum agreed that finding a way to reduce the area’s grievous commute, rated the worst in the country, was a top priority. “The commute, the commute, it has come to dominate our lives,” said Gerarda Culipher (R), of Oakton, who is running for a seat in the 34th Senate District against incumbent Chap Petersen (D), a Fairfax City attorney…

Candidates for the 34th District Senate seat answer resident questions at Vienna debate
The Silver Line was one issue on which Incumbent State Sen. Chap Petersen (D) and Republican challenger Gerarda Culipher couldn't agree Thursday night, in one of the first debates of the 34th District Senate race. The debate at Vienna's American Legion gave the more than 60 residents that filled the hall an early glimpse of the candidates' positions on roads, businesses, jobs and taxes. Culipher said she'd would work to triple the number of parking spaces allocated for stations on Silver Line, which would make Metro a more accessible option for commuters from Chantilly and Centreville, she said. "Inadequate Metro parking is the single reason people do not use it," Culipher said. "I hear [that] time and again from the voters." In regards to…

Candidates for the 34th District Senate seat answer resident questions at Vienna debate
Incumbent Sen. Chap Petersen (D) and Republican challenger Gerarda Culipher faced off Thursday night in one of the first debates of the 34th District Senate race. The debate at Vienna's American Legion gave the more than 60 residents that filled the hall an early glimpse of the candidates' positions on roads, businesses, jobs and taxes. The "new 34th District" now includes more of Centreville and Chantilly, along with its long-standing base of voters in Vienna, Oakton, Fairfax City, as well as parts of Burke and Annandale. Candidates clashed early in the debate on environmental regulations and tax credits. Portions of Centreville, such as the Cub Run and Deer Park precincts, are new to the district. He expressed his pride for the work he has done for the community and that he hopes to continue.
