Best, Worst Days for Thanksgiving Travel

If you're driving anywhere in Northern Virginia this Thanksgiving, try to leave very early in the morning.

While Northern Virginia is traffic-heavy throughout the holiday period, the day before Thanksgiving is the heaviest travel day by far. To help you plan your travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation created this set of maps showing Thanksgiving traffic congestion from Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011. Unlike last year, the Beltway Express Lanes will be open for Thanksgiving, which may alleviate some of the Thanksgiving travel congestion on Wednesday. The 2011 maps show the heaviest travel in Northern Virginia last year, particularly around the Beltway and on I-95 south of Burke, was between 1–4 p.m. Wednesday. Tip: Try to leave Tuesday or very early Wednesday if you can. There are fewer people on the roads early in …

Tropical Storm Isaac Bumps Up Local Gas Prices Again

Hitting the road this weekend? You may pay 4 percent more for gas.

Since then-Hurricane Isaac hit land Tuesday afternoon, there has been an average 4 cent increase in gas prices across the nation, a bump felt at the pump in Northern Virginia as well, according to AAA. Since Wednesday evening, Isaac was bumped back to a tropical storm but is still expected to cause heavy rains and winds as it moves inland this week. “I think the change in gas prices is short-lived,” said John Townsend, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Once the weather changes, hopefully we’ll see prices similar to what they were before the storm.” In the Washington, D.C. area, the average gas price for regular gasoline jumped from $3.93 to $3.99 since Tuesday night, according to AAA. In the D.C. metro area gas prices increased from an …

Gas Prices: Labor Day Weekend and Nearby College Towns

Hurricane Isaac could increase gas prices in Virginia. If you're traveling Labor Day Weekend or driving to college, here's what AAA says about gas prices.

Hurricane Isaac, which may hit the Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday and has already shut down several refineries, could send gas prices up right before Labor Day weekend. But for now, it looks like Americans are still making plans to travel. The average fuel price in Fairfax County on Sunday was $3.80 — more than 20-cents higher than just a month ago and slightly higher than Friday's national average of $3.75. AAA defines the Labor Day holiday weekend as starting on Thursday and ending Monday, Sept. 3. AAA projects that 33 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend. “In the absence of strong economic growth that might fuel a significant boost in travel volume, it is an …

AAA: Fuel Prices on the Rise

Gas may be high until after Labor Day.

Your trip to the beach this month may cost more than earlier this summer, as fuel prices creep up across Northern Virginia. The current average nationwide is $3.53 for a regular gallon of gas, according to Oil Price Information Service and AAA. In the D.C. metro area, prices are in line with the nationwide average at $3.53. The D.C-area average was $3.50 a week ago and $3.38 a month ago, according to AAA. Travelers headed to popular beaches in Virginia may find gas prices lower at their destination than here in the D.C. metro area. The average in Ocean City, Md. is $3.51 for a regular gallon of unleaded. In Virginia Beach and on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the average is $3.38. “Gas prices have risen steadily since early July and might …

Speak Out: Are You Hitting the Road for Memorial Day Weekend?

AAA projects more than 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from home this weekend.

As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers increased by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30.7 million people plan to drive to their destination, up 1.2 percent from the 30.3 million who drove last year. According to The Washington Post, retail gas prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon on Friday after a spike in April, and the weaker demand is also helping to push down prices. "The overall domestic economic picture continues to improve slightly, …

$4.25+ Per Gallon?

Gas could reach $4.25 a gallon by end of April and gas tax increases are on the table in Virginia.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is worried about rising gas prices, fearing they could reach more than $4 by the end of April. Commuters are also starting to pay more attention, particularly with an ongoing debate in both Virginia and Maryland related to increasing gas taxes. “I am extremely concerned by recent reports that oil and gasoline prices continue to rise and gas could reach an average of $4.25 a gallon by April,” McDonnell stated in a press release issued this week. According to the release, “The average price for a gallon of gas has recently topped $3.53 a gallon, up 25 cents since January 1, and up from $3.17 a gallon a year ago.” If gas does in fact hit $4.25 a gallon by May, that would break the July 2008 record of $4.11, says …
