Tips for Year-End Giving From the IRS

The IRS offers reminders to taxpayers of guidelines for charitable donations.

Do you plan to donate to charity before the year ends? Keep in mind that some IRS guidelines have changed in recent years.  The IRS offered the following tips for taxpayers on year-end giving:  Rules for Clothing and Household Items To be deductible, clothing and household items donated to charity generally must be in good used condition or better. A clothing or household item (such as furniture) for which a taxpayer claims a deduction of over $500 does not have to meet this standard if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the return. Guidelines for Monetary Donations To deduct any charitable donation of money, regardless of amount, a taxpayer must have a bank record or a written communication from the charity …

Connection Newspapers CEO Guilty of Failing to Pay Taxes

Peter Labovitz, president and CEO, owes nearly $1 million in past payroll taxes.

Peter Labovitz, the president and CEO of Connection Newspapers, faces up to a year in jail after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of failing to pay the IRS nearly $1 million in payroll taxes. Labovitz admitted in federal court that he collected income and Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes from the company's employees, but he did not pay the IRS in a timely manner for a three-month period in 2007. The total amount owed is more than $940,000, the Justice Department said in a news release.  Labovitz, an Alexandria resident and the company's president for the past 20 years, attributed the Connection's financial difficulties to a drop in revenue after 9/11 and again during the recession.
