The Centreville-based Virginia Spartans 13U team raised $21,029.98 for Kyle's Kamp, an organization which raises money and awareness for children fighting cancer. As a reward, the team was invited to play at Nationals Park over Memorial Day weekend. Rob Hahne, a Centreville resident, started Kyle's Kamp and named it after his son, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of six. The Memorial Day tournament, which is now in its second year, has collectively raised over $400,000 for the Children's National Medical Center.

The Southwestern Youth Association's Mets 8U and 10U teams held a car wash on Saturday afternoon to benefit pediatric cancer research. The team held the car wash at the Shell station in the Union Mill Colonnade in honor of Kyle's Kamp and raised $560. County-wide event raises over $10,000 for pediatric cancer patients, including a 7-year-old Centreville boy.
When someone is put in the situation that Rob Hahne was this past fall, "your world changes very quickly." "You now have a child with cancer," he wrote on the website he and his wife, Madison High School teacher Kieran Hahne, created for his 7-year-old son Kyle. "It is obviously something that nobody wants to deal with it but we really don't have much of a choice. We have to deal with it and we have to be strong for all of our children. That isn't always easy but it is a necessity," he wrote. Kyle, just six at the time, was diagnosed with leukemia in the fall of 2010.
