Commission Recommends Approval for Expansion of Compton Road Electrical Substation

Dominion Power wants to significantly expand the Harrison Substation on Compton Road.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended on Thursday that the Board of Supervisors approve Dominion Virginia Power's bid to expand the Harrison Substation on Compton Road.  No speakers attended the public hearing on the matter Thursday night. In order to construct a 90-foot tall structure and expand the substation by 3,757 feet, Dominion has to obtain a special exception application and a public facilities application. The matter will now go before the Board of Supervisors for final approval.  Fairfax County staff have also previously recommended approval of expansion at the substation, which is owned by NOVEC. Dominion Wants to Expand Compton Road Electrical Substation

The power company is seeking approval from Fairfax County to allow a 3,757 square foot expansion and construction of a 90-foot tall structure at the NOVEC substation.

Dominion Virginia Power is asking Fairfax County for permission to expand at the NOVEC electrical substation on Compton Road.  If the county approves the bid, Dominion would expand the substation by 3,757 square feet and construct a 90-foot-tall "backbone" structure with equipment, Supervisor Michael Frey told the Board of County Supervisors on Feb. 12.  In order to construct, Dominion has to obtain a special exception application and a public facilities application.  Frey said that county staff have recommended approval in their report. He said he is not aware of any objections from the community to the application.  Dominion has to wait until April 18 to vet the project to at a planning commission hearing. NOVEC Credits $1 Million to Customers on December Bill

NOVEC's strong financial situation allows it to return money to its customers.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative customers should see a credit on their December bills, thanks to a $1.05 million cash return from the comapny. NOVEC is a nonprofit that reinvests margins to maintain, improve and expand its electricity-distribution system. This year, the company's strong finanical situation allowed it to return some of the margin to its customers, NOVEC President and CEO Stan Feuerberg said. This return in capital is referred to as a "CashBack" by NOVEC officials, he said. The credit comes in spite of unanticipated costs from June's derecho storm and Hurricane Sandy, Feuerberg said.  “The timing of the board’s decision couldn’t be better,” Feuerberg said. “This CashBack return, combined with our reduced rates and a …

NOVEC Customers Pay Less for Electricity

Residents get relief in the form of a reduction in energy costs from the cooperative.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, the company that provides power to Centreville, said residents are paying less money for energy than others living in the United States. Customers are reaping the benefits of a power cost adjustment (PCA) credit received this year. That credit is in addition to an across-the-board rate reduction in 2011, NOVEC officials said. NOVEC enters into long and short-term contracts to buy power from multiple sources, according to a company press release. The company was able to stabilize wholesale power costs by ending a contract with a long-time power supplier in 2008, said Stan Feuerberg, the president and CEO of NOVEC.  “Costs had spiraled upward by 60 percent in six years and we wanted to drive them …
