Oakton wins game by one point, 14-13.
With only three seconds to go in the Northern Region Football semifinal, Oakton High quarterback Kyle Downer tucked the ball, scrambled to his right and dove into the end zone after a 6-yard run as time expired, lifting the Cougars over Centreville with a thrilling 14-13 victory. Oakton's hard-nosed defense held the Wildcats to one touchdown in the first half, but the offense had trouble finding the end zone. After halftime, Oakton came back to tie the game 7-7 with an impressive scorring drive in the the third quarter that culminated in a 9-yard pass to tight end Greg Derosa. Principal applauds graduates for “grit” and determination
More than 500 family members and friends on Friday attended the graduation ceremonies for 84 students from Mountain View Alternative High School, one of the county’s two high schools which offer students a different path to a diploma. Held at Oakton High School in Vienna to accommodate the large crowd, it was a typical graduation ceremony in many ways, with lots of happy students and beaming family members, proud of their graduates. It was different also in the thorny paths many of the students had to take to getting their degrees, said Principal Dave Jagels, a former assistant principal at Westfield High School. Students who need a free dress for prom can get one at the "Classroom on the Mall" this week.
Marketing students enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools' "Classroom on the Mall" course will open an annual prom dress shop on Friday at Fair Oaks Mall, where they will give away free dresses to students in need. “This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” Miranda Schick, the course's teacher, said in a press release. “First, students apply marketing lessons to a real-world retail environment.
