Man Who Raped 8-Year-Old Also Pleads Guilty to Immigration Charges

The case fueled changes to the federal Secure Communities program last year.

Salvador Portillo Saravia, who was sentenced early this year to 25 years in prison for raping an 8-year-old Centreville girl, on Thursday also pleaded guilty to immigration charges. Portillo Saravia, 30, a citizen of El Salvador, faces up to two years in prison for illegally re-entering the United States after being deported. He pleaded guilty in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton and will be sentenced on August 31.  News of the sexual assault and illegal re-entry made waves nationally, after a Washington Post article revealed that Portillo Saravia never should have been in the country in the first place—and by extension, that there were shortcomings with Secure Communities, a federal database that tracks deported …

Man Sentenced for Raping 8-Year-Old Centreville Girl

Salvador Portillo-Saravia, 30, was sentenced in Fairfax County Circuit Court on Friday.

Salvador Portillo-Saravia used to call the young Centreville girl his niece. After all, he was a fixture in her life as she grew up, even if they weren't related to one another. He came over to her home to celebrate birthdays, joined in on family parties, and even occasionally spent the weekend.  But just after the family celebrated Christmas in 2010, Portillo-Saravia, apparently drunk at the time, raped the girl, who was only 8 years old. On Friday, Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Dennis J. Smith sentenced Portillo-Saravia to 15 years in prison for the sodomy charge, with 10 years suspended.
