Westfield Keeps Perfect Season Going with 34-27 Win Over Chantilly

It was a tough game, and a cold one.

The undefeated Westfield Bulldogs defeated the Chantilly Chargers 34-27 on Friday night. Westfield faces Oakton in the AAA Concorde game next week.  "We're not putting our stuff away, and we'll be practicing on Thanksgiving," said Westfield head coach Kyle Simmons to his team after the game. "You all are the best team that I have ever coached."  Westfield took an early lead in the first quarter and scored consistently throughout the game, taking a lead that even 20 unanswered fourth quarter points by Chantilly could not overcome.  Here's a breakdown of the game: Note: This article has been corrected regarding who Westfield plays next.

Westfield High Football: New Bulldogs Prep for Opener

Younger, yet talented players make up Simmons’ varsity squad in 2012.

This season, Coach Kyle Simmons and his Bulldogs hope to repeat the success of 2011, when the team romped their way through the regular season and district tournament to win yet another Concorde Title While last year’s senior-dominant team graduated a vast majority of its starters, Simmons is excited to coach a younger team with a goal of making the playoffs. But first the Bulldogs must host South Lakes in the season opener Thursday night. “The motto this year has been “Next man in” and we’ve had t-shirts printed out that I gave to the kids,” said Simmons. “It signifies we had a lot of kids graduate and we need to figure out who the next person is.” A lot of seniors did indeed graduate—40 in fact. Many coaches would panic when faced with a…

Westfield Athletics Dominates in 2012 Postseason

Weekly sports recap: Donahue wins state wrestling title, indoor track and field wins regional title, and more.

Donahue wins another state championship for Westfield Wrestling team Junior Westfield High School wrestler Beau Donahue did it again. He became Virginia’s 152-pound high school state-champion wrestler Saturday night at Robinson Secondary School. The victory gave Donahue back-to-back titles, as he won the 140-pound weight class in 2011. Coach Chuck Hoskins and his Westfield Bulldogs earned a top-ten finish as a team and had five of its eight competitors finish in the top ten, including Donahue: Brett Campbell (fifth), Stephen Aiello (sixth), Derek Arnold (seventh) and Tyler Morson (seventh). Four of the five standouts return next season for a shot at repeating, while Campbell will graduate in June. Bulldogs suffer heartbreaker to Rams in …

Westfield Wrestling Team Wins Northern Region

Westfield High School weekly sports recap.

Coach Chuck Hoskins and his stalwart varsity wrestling team’s 2012 postseason success continued to bloom as the Bulldogs brought home the Northern Regional Championship banner last Saturday night after winning the tourney with a score of 193 points. The championship is Westfield High’s fourth regional title throughout the past five years. Eight wrestlers will represent Westfield at the state championships later this month. The Bulldogs also won the Concorde District tournament on Feb. 4. “We’re excited and still have some work to do,” said Hoskins, hours before the regional matches. “We’re in a good place right now by God’s grace. If we perform like we did last weekend—if they do that we’ll be right in the mix.” Hoskins’ boys did indeed …

Elcano Leading Bulldogs to Banner Year

Star center takes on leadership role for Westfield basketball team

The Westfield High Bulldogs (12-3, 3-0) have dominated the hardwood this season and are fresh off a win-streak of four in a row and seven out of their last eight games. The team is just one win shy of its 13 victories from the 2010-11 season, with plenty of basketball still left to play. Why the big turn around? Well, senior Zach Elcano is one ‘giant’ reason the Bulldogs seem the team to beat in the Concorde. The 6-feet-11 inches, 245-pound center leads his squad in scoring with an average of 13-points per game. Elcano said he took it upon himself in the off-season to become more physical to help lead the Bulldogs in a shot at bringing home championship banners this year. “We definitely needed someone to step up and be a leader,” said …
