Dominion Wants to Expand Compton Road Electrical Substation

The power company is seeking approval from Fairfax County to allow a 3,757 square foot expansion and construction of a 90-foot tall structure at the NOVEC substation.

Dominion Virginia Power is asking Fairfax County for permission to expand at the NOVEC electrical substation on Compton Road.  If the county approves the bid, Dominion would expand the substation by 3,757 square feet and construct a 90-foot-tall "backbone" structure with equipment, Supervisor Michael Frey told the Board of County Supervisors on Feb. 12.  In order to construct, Dominion has to obtain a special exception application and a public facilities application.  Frey said that county staff have recommended approval in their report. He said he is not aware of any objections from the community to the application.  Dominion has to wait until April 18 to vet the project to at a planning commission hearing. Thunderstorms Usher Heat Out of Northern Virginia

Temperatures drop from 100-plus to 80s.

Although Sunday evening's thunderstorms that rattled through the area knocked out power to 4,206 in Northern Virginia, according to Dominion Power, it did get rid of the oppressive heat. The heatwave that clamped down on the area and refused to leave broke records for sticking around for 10 days of 95-plus degree heat. Northern Virginia will see highs Monday of 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS forecasts that temperatures will hold steady throughout the week, with highs in the 80s, but we could see more thunderstorms through Wednesday.
