Don,
My issue is with you falsely trying to make this incident into some sort of cultural warfare on the part of the Village Cafe owners. You have zero evidence to support such an accusation, so yes, I'm calling you out on your "hunch." However, you're clearly determined to read whatever you want into this incident, so I won't engage in any further conversation. -

ReplyI'm not sure what religion has to do with this, Don. This is a teaching moment about the Americans With Disabilities Act. It doesn't really matter why the person who refused service hates dogs. The outcome was a very serious mistake, and everyone involved recognizes that now. I have no idea what the employee's religion is, but I can tell you this: the owners of the Village Cafe are not plotting to take over the world, they're just running a small family business.

ReplyGreat question. While nothing's impossible, I doubt that this will ever go to trial. Most cases plead out.

ReplyThanks for the blog post, Jim! You really made me laugh. I have occasionally gone to the lunches and really enjoyed them. It's true--Rotary, at least in Centreville and Chantilly, is not at all what I thought it would be initially. I think people would be surprised by how diverse the members are, in ages, viewpoints, walks of life, etc.

ReplyWhat a difficult choice! I'm so sorry for your loss. I sympathize with your predicament and I don't think there's any one right or wrong answer. It's a tough question to grapple with.
My first instinct when I got my puppy was to get pet insurance, which is subsidized by my job. I didn't ever want to be in a situation where I would have to make a decision based on finances, not what was best for the dog. After doing more research, though, I realized that it wasn't what I had hoped for—as someone else notes above, it is quite expensive (even with a subsidy) and the company would only pay a fraction of the cost of medical procedures. And even then, you'd still have to somehow come up with the money first.
I decided instead to open a separate savings account for my dog; instead of sending my money to an insurance company, I'm saving the amount I would pay every month (and in a separate account, I'm not as tempted to spend the money!). This way, I have the security of knowing I have a little put away to at least cushion the blow if anything happens. And if nothing happens, then I can use the money elsewhere.

On the article Will Metrorail Extend the Orange Line to Centreville?

ReplyI'm curious how they would manage this with an already overcrowded Orange line. A few years back, I used to take the from Vienna station to DC during rush hour. Even then we would all be packed in like sardines by the time we got to East Falls Church—and past that station, you'd be really lucky if you were able to get inside at all. I wonder how they would accommodate potentially thousands of new commuters? Even if they added more trains, it seems like they would still have a lot of work to do to make it feasible. Maybe if they add some "express" trains that skip certain stops, like in NYC? Any thoughts on this from people who currently ride the Orange line?

The information about where he drove is taken from the search warrant. Sorry, I don't have any further information.
