Martin Lurther King Jr. Memorial a Great Place for Families

Weather did not stop families from visiting the Martin Lurther King Jr. Memorial opening week.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial opened to the public this week. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was suppose to be dedicated on Sunday, August 28.  Because of , this event was cancelled and is postponed to sometime in September or October.

People really liked this memorial. Here is what kids liked. Elizabeth, age 7, from Alexandria, VA said, "I think it is very big and pretty. I like how the carvers carved it." 

Skylar, age 9, from Alexandria, VA said, "It is pretty cool because it shows you more about him and some quotes he said."

People were busy taking pictures. There were National Park Rangers and Police.  Early in the morning, Martin Luther King Jr.'s son and family were there.

This is what Emilie who visited from Maryland said, "I marched with Martin Luther King Jr. when I was 11. I was there at the original 'I Have a Dream Speech'." She remembered her mother telling her, "Make sure you listen, because this is a historical event." Emilie visited the memorial with her mom. Emilie also brought her daughter, Brooke, age 2. She brought Brooke because it was important for her daughter to experience the monument.

The monument is shaped based on the 'I Have a Dream' speech. There is also a time capsule, that items will be placed in at the dedication ceremony that will be opened in 50 years.

Here is what Park Ranger Ronald said, "The expression on his face shows power to tell kids they can do anything."

Andrew, age 8, who came all the way from Chicago, said, "This memorial is a great honor of him. He made famous speeches, including one in Memphis."

This memorial would be a great sightseeing event for you and your family.
