Flooding Wreaks Havoc Across County

Bulova: residents should stay inside.

11:23 p.m. There will be no VRE service for Friday due to washout conditions. 

10:26 p.m. Emergency update from Fairfax County says that offices are open Friday, Sept. 9. The courts have not yet made a decision on their operating status.

10:15 p.m. From Fairfax County: "Stay off the roads, especially at night. Fairfax County has received 5 inches of rain in the last 3 hours. Heavy rains will continue until approximately midnight."

9:31 p.m. Fairfax County Public Schools confirms that all schools are closed on Sept. 9th, along with all activities. Offices remain open. This also means that football games for tomorrow are cancelled as well. 

9:10 p.m. WTOP is reporting that Fairfax County Public Schools are closed Friday. Administrative offices will remain open. Centreville Patch has not received an official announcement to that effect yet.

Chairman Sharon Bulova wrote on the Fairfax County emergency blog: "Fairfax County and the Northern Virginia area is experiencing a very serious storm event." (Emphasis in original).

"Unless it is an emergency, residents should stay home and not risk being out in this storm," she said. She noted that some areas, such as Mount Vernon, are being evacuated. Several media outlets are reporting that there are already two flood deaths in NoVa, including a

6:20 p.m. All Fairfax County Public Schools activities are cancelled. The school system sent out the following list of cancelled activities


•       Late buses
•       Extracurricular activities
•       Interscholastic contests
•       Team practices
•       Field trips
•       Middle school after-school programs
•       Professional learning and training courses
•       All adult and community education classes
•       Recreation programs and community use
•       SACC centers remain open until 6:15 p.m.

5:50 p.m. The flooding may not have hit Centreville as badly as just down the road in Fairfax, but we're not out of the woods yet. The National Weather Service warns that the situation is extremely dangerous as more rain is on the way. The flash flood warning is in effect until 9:15 p.m. tonight. Expect another two to three inches tonight and stay off the road if possible. 

Thursday 3:30 p.m. The heavy rains that have pounded our area will continue until 10 p.m. tonight, and have already caused some traffic tangles right before rush hour. 

Commuters trying to take a back route home on Route 50 should know

that the road is a mess due to closures and flooding. All lanes on Route 50E near Fair Oaks Mall were closed due to the flooding and traffic is being diverted out onto West Ox Road. 

On I-66 at mile marker 60 (near Fairfax and Oakton), there is a vehicle accident causing delays and congestion. The west left shoulder is closed. Traffic backups just past Centreville on I-66, near mile marker 49.1, streched for three miles. 

also sent out a note to parents saying that as there were road closures and flooding around the county, bus routes may be affected. "The implications are that buses may arrive late to schools for dismissal and that students will arrive home late. There also is a possibility that students will be returned to schools if buses cannot get through some of the roadways," the note read. 

The Capital Weather Gang notes that rain is falling at three inches an hour in some areas of Western Fairfax, including Centreville and Chantilly. Fairfax County is also under a flash flood warning until 5:30 p.m.
