Police Shoot, Kill Armed Man on Kendra Way

Man refused to put down his weapon, authorities say.

Fairfax County Police shot and killed a Centreville man armed with a shotgun early this morning, authorities said. 

Ricardo Leon, 34, of 6165 Kendra Way, died early this morning. Police said that a neighbor and a woman inside the house dialed 911 just after 1:30 a.m. When they arrived, they saw Leon walking around inside the garage with a shotgun. They ordered him to set the gun down; when he ignored repeated warnings and began walking towards the officers, they opened fire.

Officers performed first aid until Fire and Rescue arrived, but Leon died at the scene.

WJLA reports that Leon was a Marine veteran and a current police lieutenant with the Naval Observatory. 

It is unclear at this point how many shots were fired, or whether the gun was pointed at anyone.

The incident is being investigated by internal affairs. Four officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated, police said.
