Are Local Kids On a 'Race to Nowhere'?

Film has been a topic of discussion for parents throughout the county.

Are local kids on a "race to nowhere"?

That's the question that a lot of parents are asking, after recent screenings of a film in Centreville and throughout Fairfax County. "Race to Nowhere" focuses the destructive effects of an education system that pushes for a constant state of high achievement, or as the New York Times put it in a recent article, "the downside of childhoods spent on résumé-building."

The film focuses on the high level of pressure students are under to take multiple A.P. courses, practice a sport year-round, participate in a number of extracurricular activities—all to get into a good college. But stress-related illnesses, depression and anxiety are growing among kids who are balancing too many activities.
