Nine-Year-Old Volunteer Wins $10k College Scholarship

Gabrielle Levy, of Centreville, won a national award for promoting volunteerism.

A student recently won a $10,000 college scholarship from Kohl's in recognition of her extensive volunteer work.

Gabrielle Levy, age 9 and a Centreville resident, was one of ten winners, out of the over 35,000 people who applied for the Kohl's Cares college scholarship nationally, department store management announced Tuesday. Kohl's will also donate $1,000 to a nonprofit on her behalf.

has already reached a number of milestones for her young age. At age 5, she was the youngest person ever to win Lady Fairfax award, which the county's Board of Supervisors presents annually to a person doing notable work in the community. And along with her 7-year-old brother , they are two of the youngest bloggers ever to write for Patch.com. They post regularly about volunteering and activities for kids in the area.

Perhaps most notably, however, she and her brother Aiden founded a program, Caring Kids Cards which encourages children to mail cards to people including military, veterans, elderly people and many others. They wanted to find a way to help young people make a difference in the community, and have since sent out thousands of cards to people around the world.

"Now that I have won this award, I will not stop volunteering, but I will now be even more passionate about what I love best," Gabrielle wrote on the night she got the award. "I hope to get even more kids involved and motivate them to volunteer more."
